Honda Reduces, Reuses, and Now Recycles Rare Earth Metals

It's no secret. Honda is one of the greenest automakers around. That's largely because the company adheres to the 3R rule whenever possible: reduce, reuse, and recycle. While these three components of sustainability are often interconnected, Germain Honda of Dublin would like to take a minute to focus in on the latter and share some extremely exciting Honda news.

In an effort to strengthen its recycling practices, Honda teamed up with Japan Metals & Chemicals Co., Ltd. and developed a groundbreaking process to extract rare earth metals from used Honda parts. Specifically, this innovative practice will allow for the recycling of materials found in the nickel-metal hydride batteries of hybrids such as the Honda Civic Hybrid. According to company officials, up to 80 percent of rare earth metals found in these batteries will be saved and given new life.

Not only does the automaker's feat resound on an individual, company level, but it marks a significant step for the auto industry as a whole. In a recent press release, officials note, "The new operation will be the first in the world to extract rare earth metals as part of a mass-production process at a recycling plant."1

Of course, Honda has no plans to stop here. The automaker hopes to move forward quickly with extracting rare earth metals from used parts in other new Honda vehicles than just hybrids. To learn more as the process evolves, Germain Honda of Dublin encourages you to check in with our Honda blog or stop by 6715 Sawmill Road Dublin, OH 43017 and catch up on the latest news in person.
