Honda Odyssey Generations

Honda Odyssey First Generation

First Generation (1995-1998)

The Honda Odyssey was initially conceived in the early to mid-1990s in the midst of Japan’s economic struggles. As a result, the Odyssey was constructed to conform to the country’s size restrictions and manufactured in an existing facility with minimal updates. It was considered one of the earliest mainstream MPVs (multi-purpose vehicles) and became quite a hit overseas before it made its way to North American shores.

Built using the underpinnings of the Accord platform, the first generation Honda Odyssey featured a 4-cylinder engine, ABS brakes, and a clever dual-zone heating feature. In addition to its more compact size, American buyers quickly noticed key differences between the Odyssey and typical US-spec minivans. The first was its conventional swing-out doors instead of sliding doors found on competitors. Another huge advantage was its stowable third row of seats, a feature that’s now mainstream across the minivan segment.

Honda Odyssey Second Generation

Second Generation (1999-2004)

The 1999 model year marked the arrival of the second-generation Honda Odyssey in the United States. Considerably larger than its predecessor, the second-gen Odyssey also adopted dual sliding rear doors and came equipped with a more powerful V6 engine as standard – two features that were typically expensive options on rival minivans. Another unique milestone for this generation was the arrival of a satellite-linked navigation system as an available feature, a first for both the Honda brand and for the minivan segment as a whole. More premium features like leather-trimmed upholstery and a power moonroof were added to higher trim levels of the Honda Odyssey as well.

Honda Odyssey Third Generation

Third Generation (2005-2010)

Although wider than the outgoing version, the third-generation Honda Odyssey built on its strong reputation with key improvements to both refinement and feature content. Side-curtain airbags and electronic stability control were both added as standard features along with the incorporation of Honda ACE body engineering for enhanced safety. Also new for this generation was the Odyssey Touring trim level that sits atop the model range. Premium features of Touring models included run-flat tires, power tailgate, power-adjustable pedals, memory seats, and exclusive chrome exterior accents. Another improvement that might sound familiar to you was the debut of the popular Honda Magic Seat seating configuration that allowed for easier adjustability and cargo storage – two essential components of any minivan.

Honda Odyssey Fourth Generation

Fourth Generation (2011-2017)

For 2011, the popular Honda Odyssey entered its fourth generation with streamlined styling and expanded dimensions. Longer, wider, and with a lower roofline than prior models – the Odyssey also benefitted from revised suspension tuning in 2014. Its already impressive list of standard and available safety features grew as well with new additions like the Honda LaneWatch system, blind spot monitoring, and forward collision warning. A new range-topping model, the Odyssey Elite, also arrived for the fourth generation with optional equipment like a premium audio system, rear-seat entertainment system, and voice-controlled satellite GPS navigation system. This generation of the Honda Odyssey was assembled exclusively in Lincoln, Alabama.

Honda Odyssey Fifth Generation

Fifth Generation (2018-Present)

With a history that stretches back three decades, the fifth generation of the Honda Odyssey represents the pinnacle of what a minivan can be. Along with spacious seating for up to 8, the Odyssey is also engineered with numerous smart seating solutions to carry passengers, cargo, or even a combination of both. Cutting-edge technology features available on the latest Odyssey models include optional Honda CabinWatch™, CabinTalk™, Advanced Rear Entertainment System, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), and much more.
