Honda Pilot Generations & History

Honda Pilot Generations & History Overview - Germain Honda of Dublin

Close to the end of the prior century, many shoppers flocked to join the SUV craze. Sport utility vehicles represented a refreshing departure from minivans, station wagons, large sedans, and other types of people-movers. They featured an elevated ride height, a more confident driving position, superior off-road capabilities, and rugged exterior styling elements. In an effort to capitalize on this growing demand for SUVs, Honda introduced the adventurous Pilot back in 2003 and they instantly created a hit.

If you’ve been wondering about the history of the Honda Pilot or what makes each generation different from the next, you’ve come to the right place! Germain Honda of Dublin has assembled this informative guide that covers each individual generation of the Honda Pilot along with the unique features and innovations that debut with each one. Let’s get started!

Honda Pilot Generations

Honda Pilot First Generation

First Generation (2003-2008)

With the development and design phases split between Raymond, Ohio, and Torrance, California, the Honda Pilot took aim at the most established SUV entrants in the industry back in 2003. Unlike the lumbering, bouncy, body-on-frame entrants that currently occupied the segment, the all-new Pilot debuted with a unibody design that maximized both on-road manners and interior space. It retained the confident seating position, rugged exterior appearance, and Variable Torque Management 4WD that buyers craved. Power came in the form of a standard 3.5L SOHC V6 featuring the legendary VTEC® variable valve control system. Every first-generation Pilot was assembled by Honda Canada Manufacturing in Alliston, Ontario. Initial sales were robust and far exceeded expectations. Subsequent model years saw more upscale trim levels added along with more interior amenities.

Honda Pilot Second Generation

Second Generation (2009-2015)

Following the popularity of the first-gen, the second generation Honda Pilot was redesigned inside and out with greater interior space, more SUV-like styling elements, and improved driving characteristics. While it retained its signature 3.5L V6, horsepower was increased to 250. It also prominently featured the Honda-exclusive Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE®) body structure for improved safety. Other new features included an aluminum hood, tilt/telescopic steering column, Bluetooth® phone connectivity, and an available power tailgate. Assembly of the second generation Honda Pilot also shifted to the United States at the Honda Alabama Auto Plant.

Honda Pilot Third Generation

Third Generation (2016-2022)

For the 2016 model year, the Honda Pilot underwent yet another extensive redesign that further enhanced interior quality and convenience features. Beginning with performance, the third-gen Pilot received a more powerful direct-injected 3.5-liter SOHC i-VTEC® V6 engine with VCM® and EarthDreams® Technology paired with a new optional 9-speed automatic transmission. A new benchmark was also achieved with the debut of the all-new intelligent variable torque management (i-VTM4™) all-wheel drive system with Intelligent Traction Management and torque vectoring capability. Sitting atop the lineup was a new Pilot Elite trim level that boasted luxurious amenities including ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, a heated steering wheel, and a first-ever panoramic glass roof.

Honda Pilot Fourth Generation

Fourth Generation (2023-Present)

After three generations of success, we’ve arrived at the latest fourth-generation Honda Pilot which made its debut for the 2023 model year.
